Filmed in 16mm, Artmaking is a fake, yet auto-biographical interview I created during my last semester at RISD: The dialogue was scripted beforehand, memorized, and performed for the camera. I was inspired by the documentary Painter’s Painting, but the questions are asked in English and answered in French, like international news interviews on TV. The French dialogue itself mimics the trope of documentary interviews of European artist / intellectuals. Cut between segments of the interview are clips from two ballets: The first is a Hollywood version of Swan Lake choreographed by George Balanchine entitled I Was an Adventuress (1940), starring Vera Zorina. The second is a 1965 performance of Allegra Kent and Conrad Ludlow in Balanchine’s Symphony in C, to music by Bizet.
