_George Horner was born in Dallas in 1951 and grew up in San Antonio.

 

He co-founded the first artist-run gallery in San Antonio in 1976, S.A.M.O.M.A., performed in the legendary Ki-Flow Turtle group, and recreated the assassination of Kennedy entitled, The Johnny Jackie Hamburger Happening in Dallas. George earned his Masters degree from the University of Chicago in 1981, and then worked at the Museum of Contemporary Art, while creating “pop up” exhibitions in Chicago. George exhibited at Randolph Street, N.A.M.E., and Nancy Lurie Gallery in Chicago.

 

In 1984, George was offered a job at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York and has worked with Tony for the past 28 years. He received an NEA Grant in 1986.

 

He is married to the artist Michele Hemsoth and has a son named Noah Max (named after the author Noah Webster and Max Ernst, one of George’s favorite artists). George, Michele, and Noah live in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
